In a recent engagement, we were asked to analyze state-of-the-art in deduplication technology, which promises significant reductions in the amount of data being stored. Our analysis covered both general-purpose, block-based deduplication technologies as well as task-specific technologies, and discussed differences in functionality. We also discussed how various types of data being stored can—or cannot—take advantage of the various deduplication technologies.

We remain of the opinion that deduplication technology will continue to grow in the marketplace, but only after the perceived risks diminish.
