A Leading Provider of Search Applications

A leading provider of search applications engaged Corporate Technologies to improve the availability of their customer data center, which hosts search platforms for hundreds of leading newspapers, government agencies, Fortune 100 manufacturers, and retailers, providing millions of end users daily access to data any way they require it. The company was experiencing unacceptable data center downtime due to the installed storage solution, and they wished to explore options.

Our technical needs analysis uncovered several challenges. In addition to downtime issues, there were performance problems that made information access time for end users significantly slower than desirable. IT security proved challenging as well—it had to allow access by millions of users, while safeguarding each hosted solution from outside threats.

Corporate Technologies first architected a replacement storage solution using a 15 TB NetApp clustered storage system. Not only was storage-related downtime eliminated and I/O dramatically improved, but scalability was greatly simplified with NetApp’s modular expansion. Acceptance of the NetApp system has been so strong that a year later, a 20 TB clustered filer was added, which has since grown to 120 TB. An additional NetApp clustered system is being currently being tested to keep pace with the company’s burgeoning data store. In addition to Corporate Technologies extensive storage expertise, our end-to-end knowledge of data centers proved helpful in implementing surrounding security- and performance-enhancing technologies, including switches, back-ups, load balancers, and firewalls.

Fact:  Acceptance of the NetApp system has been so strong that shortly after initial implementation storage capacity has quadrupled.
